Shane Spiteri
Having acquired specialised skills in areas such as residential paving, landscape design, concreting, and more, Innovate Verandahs’ owner Shane worked his way up from humble beginnings to starting an industry-leading company for verandah supplies and installation.
We had a chat with Shane to find out about the origins of Innovative Verandahs, and what inspires him about the construction and landscaping industry.
Tell us how you started out in the industry?
When I was growing up, my good friend, James, had been installing Stratco patios for a number of years and was given the opportunity to become an authorised Stratco dealer. As I was a registered builder and always had a passion for the outdoors, we thought it would be great to team up.
What do you love about working in your industry?
There are a number of aspects I love, including always being outside and meeting new people. Every day and every job are different, and the finished projects of the Stratco product are the standout.
What prompted you to start your own business?
I have always been a driven kind of person, and like to keep pushing myself. Prior to this industry, I was a partner in a family concreting business, and I had my own excavation company. However, I always loved the challenge of the business side of things, learning new skills and new trades. It wasn’t until Innovative Verandahs that I knew this was the business for me.
What are your favourite types of projects and why?
I’ve always loved the Outback Sunroof (Louvers) and their ability to offer the open and closed roof to allow either light or shade. However, you could never go wrong with the Cooldek Roof with its insulation and ceiling like finish – it will transform any outdoor space.
What are your thoughts on sustainability and has it affected your business?
I believe it is critical to consider sustainability in every aspect of building, and verandahs immediately enhance a home’s environmental aspect by helping regulate temperature and provide shelter from the elements.
Additionally, by partnering with Stratco products, there’s an automatic connection with positive environmental considerations because all products are ordered to size to reduce the amount of wastage on site. If there happens to be any wastage, it is categorised to be recycled as much as possible, so it’s a win-win on all fronts.
Do you have preferred products you like to work with when building verandahs? What construction considerations do you need to be mindful of?
We chose to partner with Stratco because we are a fan of their materials and innovations. We are always mindful of house construction methods eg. timber, steel frame, for each project, as well as water drainage, particularly now due to changes in rainfall.
What have you seen recently that has inspired you?
Landscape design is something I have always loved and I draw inspiration from great designers and the direction they take their projects. Mint Landscape and Pool design is one such example. Not only do I love landscape design, but I’m also passionate about pool safety and how our verandahs and patios can be effectively incorporated to provide regulated access and shelter.
What is something you’ve learned that has affected the way you do things?
One thing I have learned is that good communication is the key to a smooth and enjoyable building experience. It’s why we are committed to ensuring open lines of communication with our clients throughout the entire building process. That way, and modifications to plans can be openly addressed immediately so as to keep costings and timelines on track.
How do you create a great working environment for your team/business?
Touching on my last answer, communication between management and staff is crucial. Every individual team member has their own needs and has their own commitments, so if you can be there for them to help them along their journey, I think it is a great thing to be a part of. Working together on a daily basis helps foster our relationships, and we encourage our team to share learnings – professional and personal – along the way. This way, everyone develops new skills and we deliver the best results possible for our clients.
What is your business’ vision?
To be able to create quality built spaces where people can relax, reconnect with family and friends and build a lifetime of wonderful memories. It’s the reason why I started Innovative Verandahs, and this is what gets me out of bed every day.
